Newsgroups

Newsgroups: General Introduction

Newsgroups are the Internet equivalent of discussion boards. Unlike e-mail which is private, a newsgroup post may be seen by anyone who is able to access and read that newsgroup.

A tutorial on finding and participating in newsgroups may be found here: http://www.wurd.com/cl_news_faq.php

There are two categories of newsgroups, the internal AT&T Worldnet (Members' only) newsgroups and the external (Usenet) newsgroups.

AT&T Worldnet groups may be discussion groups on various topics or may be help newsgroups where members may seek assistance from AT&T agents with software or to report a service issue. AT&T Worldnet groups are not disseminated beyond AT&T Worldnet customers and are not seen by other people around the world.

Usenet groups are global discussion groups accessed by people all around the world from other ISPs and online providers.

Participating In The Newsgroups

READ: How to read a newsgroup article.

When you have found a newsgroup you would like to explore, click its name in the list of all newsgroups. This will bring up a selection of subject lines (part of the article "header" ), for a group of articles in that newsgroup. Click one of the headers and the newsreader will download the article from the news server and display it on your screen.

Most newsreaders show a plus sign next to the subject line when there are follow-up articles. To see them, make sure you click on the plus (+) signs. You will then be able to view the articles and responses of others as well as see the answer to your particular question.

A list of most common news readers and how to configure them is available at the Wurd website: http://www.wurd.com/cl_news_index.php. Note that AT&T Worldnet software comes with Outlook Express or Netscape news readers.

CREATE: Posting a new newsgroup article.

Posting is the act of creating an article and putting it up on a news server so that everyone can read it -- and reply, if they like. Posting to a newsgroup is one of the basic modes of interacting with others on the Internet.

REPLY: Replying to someone else's newsgroup article.

When you reply to an article in a newsgroup, you may do it via posting, so everyone in the newsgroup can see your reply, or you can respond to the author of the article directly, using e-mail.

If you reply with a public posting of your response to the article, it's best to keep in mind some of the rules of "Netiquette" that have developed over the years of Internet history. Make sure your response quotes just the part of the article you are responding to. Make sure you are clear and concise in your response. Avoid highly emotional or controversial responses. And only post a response if it pertains to the topic of the newsgroup and if it will be of interest to the other members of the newsgroup.

If your response is of interest only to the author of the article that you are responding to, then you should send the author e-mail directly. All newsgroup articles include the author's e-mail address so you can respond directly to their e-mail address. Most newsreaders provide a method of doing this directly without the need to look for the address.

In some cases you may want to post an article to the newsgroup and send an individual email message directly to the author of the article. It may be that you have a response that will be of interest to everyone in the newsgroup, and also have a different response that will be of interest only to the author of the article.
